One of the moments that truly reminded me why we do what we do at Ocaquatics happened recently at Kendall.

One of my students, Santiago, first started with us feeling very cautious in the water. He stayed close to the wall, moved slowly, and constantly looked for reassurance. You could tell he wanted to learn, but he needed to feel safe first. Instead of rushing him, I focused on building connection and trust. We celebrated every small win, putting his face in the water, blowing bubbles, and attempting his first starfish float.

During those early classes, we worked in cheek-to-cheek formation to help him feel secure while learning proper body position for his starfish. The goal wasn’t speed, it was confidence. With each lesson, Santiago began to relax a little more. He started walking onto the pool deck with less hesitation and more confidence .

After that connection was built, everything changed. Santiago began floating in his starfish independently. Soon after, he was confidently rolling over on his own. The same student who once clung to the wall is now demonstrating independence and control in the water.

Now, he is on watch to level up to Level Three and the growth has been incredible to witness. His journey is a reminder that when we lead with patience, encouragement, and connection, real transformation happens. At Kendall, it’s not just about teaching skills, it’s about helping swimmers discover their confidence.

Every week we feature one Impact Story. If your Impact Story involves an Ocaquatics Co-Owner, you can nominate them for the 2026 Co-Owner Impact Award.
