This is an impactful story… and it’s mine. A story that taught me that many times the best opportunities come from the worst situations, and that everything in life happens for a reason.
When I emigrated to the United States, I had to start from zero. I worked in many places: Subway, food factories, restaurants, late-night deliveries… some were good, others not so much. There was a particularly hard moment: in my last job, a restaurant, they started cutting my hours because I was the newest one, until one day, with an excuse, they let me go. Suddenly I was out of work, doing Uber just to survive, with rent to pay and a lot of uncertainty for both my girlfriend and me.
One day, by pure chance, I picked up a mother and her daughter from what looked like a school. They had just come from swimming. The place was called Ocaquatics. Something inside me clicked right away — I had been an athlete for many years. On top of that, there was a huge sign that said “Always hiring.” I took a screenshot of the address, hoping I could come back one day.
A few days later, I did. At the door was Ms. Odalys, who, together with Ms. Tata, did everything possible to help me complete my application. And the rest… is history. Today I am an L2/3/SWB coach, a deck supervisor, and an MIT — all in less than a year.
Sometimes I think: what if I hadn’t driven Uber that day? What if I hadn’t accepted that ride? What if I hadn’t been let go from the restaurant? None of the good things I’m living today would have happened.
Life taught me that when you are not valued, that place is simply not meant for you. Don’t feel bad about it — you just haven’t reached the right place yet. Because there is always a place where you can truly grow, show your worth… and turn your hardest moments into the beginning of something extraordinary.
